Etymology

In older literature, the term was compared to Avestan 𐬰𐬍𐬰𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬌 (zīzəṇti),[1][2] a varia lectio now rejected by De Vaan in favor of the reading 𐬰𐬍𐬰𐬀𐬥𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬌 (zīzanəṇti).[3] However, it is probably either a late development or a grammarian's improvisation,[4] probably to explain the 3sg. perfect subjunctive ज॒जन॑त् (jajánat).[5]
