छोला

Hindi

Etymology

From Hindi छोलना (cholnā, to skin, peel), from Prakrit छोल्लइ (chŏllaï, to skin), from unattested Sanskrit *छोल्ल् (*choll, to peel, skin) (from the way chickpeas are dehulled from their pods), probably borrowed from Dravidian.[1] Compare छीलना (chīlnā, to skin). Cognate with Punjabi ਛੋਲਾ (cholā).
