Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰawṣ-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰawš-, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾ʰews-,[1] though—according to Cheung—there are no cognates outside of Indo-Iranian. Compare Old Avestan 𐬔𐬏𐬱𐬙𐬁 (gūštā), Baluchi نگوشگ (negóšag, to listen, pay attention), Middle Persian 𐫗𐫏𐫇𐫢𐫏𐫗𐫅 (nywšynd, 3pl.pres.).[2]
