Possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *krawždás (“hard, firm”). Compare Younger Avestan 𐬑𐬭𐬏𐬲𐬛𐬭𐬀 (xrūždra, “hard”), 𐬑𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬲𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀 (xraožduua, “hard”), Old Avestan 𐬑𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬲𐬛𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬀 (xraoždišta, “hardest”); however, the semantic change makes the connection uncertain.[1]
