Etymology

Meaning "one who sits on stones". The first element is from an Proto-Indo-European root *ḱorkeh₂, shared with शर्करा (śarkarā). See that root for more. Typologically compare Ancient Greek κροκόδειλος (krokódeilos, crocodile), said to be composed of the words for "pebble" and "sit".[1]
