Etymology
Of uncertain origin.
This -ḍ- form seems older than -l- forms, making connections to कल (kala, “indistinct; mumbling”) unconvincing.[1] A substrate origin is possible. However, Burrow invokes Fortunatov's law and derives it from an earlier *कल्द (*kalda), and connects this to Old Norse haltr (“lame”),[2] itself from Proto-Germanic *haltaz (“lame, halt”).[3]
