Etymology 2
Uncertain. Two theories:[1]
- Borrowed from Dravidian, ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *yĀṭu; compare Kurux एड़ा (eṛā), Telugu ఏట (ēṭa).[2]
- Somehow from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyǵ-. One possibility is a root noun with a form like *एड्भ्यः (*eḍbhyaḥ, dat.pl) was thematicised, but this is uncertain.
