Proper noun
एकलव्य • (ekalavya) stem, ? (root एकलव्य)
- (Hinduism) Ekalavya, a character from the Hindu epic the Mahabharata, who was denied the right to study archery with the Pandava princes under the acharya Drona because of his tribal status. He decided to learn from Drona by self-studying before an altar of him in the forest, and eventually became so accomplished that Drona demanded he cut his archery thumb off as a "fee for his lessons." He did this because he feared that his favorite student Arjuna would never be the greatest archer in the world so long as Ekalavya could shoot. Ekalavya submitted to Drona's demands because he still considered him his guru, and thus is considered by some Hindus to be an exemplar of loyalty and honor.
