Inherited from Old Hindi ऊभा (ūbhā, “upright, raised”),[1] from Prakrit उब्भ (ubbha), from Sanskrit ऊर्ध्व (ūrdhvá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *r̥Hdʰwás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃r̥dʰ-wó-s, from *h₃erdʰ- (“upright, high”). Cognate with Bengali উভ (ubh), উভা (ubha), Gujarati ઊભું (ūbhũ), Marathi उभे (ubhe), Odia ଉଭା (ubhā), Saraiki اُبّھا (ubbhā), and Sindhi اُڀو (ubho). Doublet of ऊर्ध्व (ūrdhva).
