Etymology

Probably from Prakrit एअस्स (eassa), from Sanskrit एतस्य (etasya), the genitive case of एतद् (etad) or from Prakrit अस्स (assa), from Sanskrit अस्य (asya), the genitive case of इदम् (idam). Cognate with Punjabi ਇਸ (is, es), Nepali यस (yas), and Maithili अस (as).
