Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃engʷ- (to anoint). Cognates include Latin ung(u)ō (I anoint), Old Armenian օծ (ōc, chrism) and Old High German ancho (butter).[1]

The meaning of the root in the Rigveda has also been suggested to be "to cause to appear, reveal, make bright",[2] presumably with a different etymology.
