Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Traditionally derived from the root अञ्ज् (añj), taken to invoke a sense "to bend" > "to honor, celebrate" which may or may not be related to the usual "anoint" sense, which is supported by Kuiper. Mayrhofer somewhat prefers an alternate derivation from an unattested *ऋञ्जलि (ṛñjalí), from ऋञ्ज (ṛñjá, reaching out or advancing forth), from the root ऋज् (ṛj, to direct, stretch), i.e. "(with both hands) stretched forth".[1]
