      Etymology 2

A Later Sanskrit term of uncertain origin. Per Turner, possibly a contraction of अच्छाय (acchāyá, without shadow), thus "unshaded" > "clear".[2] This is tentatively favored by Mayrhofer.[3]

An older theory, originally espoused by Mayrhofer prior to the above theory, postulates the term as a Sanskritization of Middle Indo-Aryan—e.g. Pali अच्छ (accha) and Prakrit अच्छ (accha)—, from a term related to the root अर्च् (arc, to shine).[4] This is rejected by Turner, who prefers the theory mentioned in the previous paragraph.
