Etymology
Inherited from Middle Persian *žarf, borrowed from Parthian 𐫋𐫜𐫡 (jfr /žafr/, “deep”), displacing native [Book Pahlavi needed] (zwpl /zofr/), both from Proto-Iranian *ǰafráh (“deep”). Possibly a doublet of جَفْر (jafr, “occult knowledge”), an Arabic loanword perhaps originally borrowed from Iranian.
