Borrowed from English masala, from Hindustani مَسَالَہ (masāla) / मसाला (masālā, “spices, seasoning”), from earlier مَصَالِحَہ (masāliha) / मसालिहा (masālihā), from Classical Persian مَصَالِح (masālih, “benefits”), plural of مَصْلَحَت (maslahat), from Arabic مَصْلَحَة (maṣlaḥa, “benevolence”). Doublet of مصالح (masālih / masâleh).
