From Classical Persian مصالح (maṣāliḥ, “affairs, materials, spices”), a plural of مصلحت (maslahat), itself borrowing from Arabic مَصْلَحَة (maṣlaḥa,"mixture") Cognates include Gujarati મસાલો (masālo), Santali ᱢᱚᱥᱞᱟ (môsla), Assamese মচলা (mosola), Bengali মশলা (mosla), Santali ᱢᱚᱥᱞᱟ (môsla).
