Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kēb- (“to chew”)[1]. Cognate with Azerbaijani gövşəmək, Gagauz gevşemää, Salar göşegüsi, Turkmen gäwüş, which derive from *kēbše-, an evolution of *kēb-.

كومك • (gevmek) (third-person singular simple present كور (gever))

  1. (transitive) to chew, masticate, champ, especially for rubbery or chewy foods
    Near-synonym: چیكنه‌مك (çiğnemek)
  2. (transitive, of animals) to ruminate, cud
