According to Kuwaiti linguist Yusuf Al-Bader, it is a borrowing From English gaze.[1] But unlikely to be so as it is rather from Arabic قَصَّ (qaṣṣa, to trace X, to look after X, to follow X's tracks) see Najdi Arabic قز for details.

      Najdi Arabic

      Root
      ق ز ز
      1 term

      Etymology

Inherited from Arabic قَصَّ (qaṣṣa, to trace, to follow someone's tracks), with /sˤ//z/ as in زَيّ (zayy, like). The semantic development from "following/tracing" to "gazing" arose from the act of watching someone from a distance while pursuing them; compare Qur'an (in Arabic), 609–632 CE, 28:11:فَبَصُرَتْ بِهِ عَن جُنُبٍfabaṣurat bihi ʕan junubinso she watched him from a distance.

The derivative قَزَّر (gazzar, to gaze for a long time) shows a root-level ر suffix indicating repetition, suggesting the word is inherited rather than borrowed.

Alternatively from جَسَّ (jassa, to examine, to look at intensely). Surface similarity to English gaze is coincidental.
