Etymology

From طوربه (torba, sack, bag) +‎ ـلو (lu, -lı). According to Nishanyan, the name of the district in İzmir province is a metathesis of Ancient Greek Μητρόπολις (Mētrópolis), a classical city whose ruins are situated near the village of Yeniköy.
