شلقومة

Moroccan Arabic

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from Classical Arabic صَلْقَمَ (ṣalqama, to grind teeth), or شَلَقَ (šalaqa, to be cleft, split lengthways).

Probably related to dialectal Arabic forms such as South Egyptian Arabic شلقومة (šalgūma, lip), Egyptian Arabic شلضومة (šalḍūma, thick lip), South Levantine Arabic شلطوفة (šalṭūfa, thick lip). Possibly doublet of شلغوم (šalḡūm, moustache)
