شلغوم
Moroccan Arabic
Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly from a Berber language; compare Kabyle acelɣum. However, these forms may themselves be borrowed from Arabic.
Alternatively, it may be related to dialectal Arabic forms such as South Egyptian Arabic شلقومة (šalgūma, “lip”), Egyptian Arabic شلضومة (šalḍūma, “thick lip”), and South Levantine Arabic شلطوفة (šalṭūfa, “thick lip”), and would thus be doublet of شلقومة (šalqūma, “lip”).
