Etymology

Inherited from Arabic تَجَشَّأَ (tajaššaʔa, “to burp”). The original vernacular form would have resembled *تْجَشَّى (*tjaššā) before the postalveolar ج (j), originally an affricate /d͡ʒ/, dissimilated from the also-postalveolar ش (š) by losing its component [ʒ]. The same dissimilation produced تْدَشَّر (tdaššar, “to break up, to divorce”) from Arabic تَجَشَّرَ (tajaššara).
