السويس

Arabic

Etymology

Uncertain but sometimes connected to South Levantine Arabic forms of سُوس (sūs, licorice). A folk etymology sometimes relates it to a supposed Egyptian suan (beginning), but this appears to be a ghost word or misinterpretation as no such word exists.
