הבאיש

Hebrew

Etymology

Root
ב־א־שׁ (b-ʾ-sh)
3 terms

Causative of בָּאַשׁ (ba'ásh, to stink). The intransitive sense comes from instead applying causativity to the noun באוש / בְּאֹשׁ (b'osh, stench), i.e. "produce stench".

Among the Semitic peoples smell is often figuratively linked to one's disposition or moral state; having a repulsive odor indicates an evil character, which is why Jacob tells his sons in Genesis 34 that they have caused him and his household to stench among the surrounding peoples after they had sacked Shechem, and this is even more directly expressed by the elders of Israel towards Moses and Aaron in Exodus 5. In an analogous manner good smell was associated with positive qualities, see בָּשַׂם (basám, to smell pleasantly) and cognates in other languages.
