Old Armenian

Inherited from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *stew(H)- (“to get dense, tight”), and cognate with Sanskrit स्तूप (stūpa, “knot or tuft of hair”), स्तुका (stúkā, “a knot or tuft of hair or wool, thick curl of hair”), Ancient Greek στύππη (stúppē), στυππεῖον (stuppeîon, “coarse fibre of flax or hemp, tow, oakum”).^[1]^[2]^[3] For more on this root see Pokorny, without the Armenian.^[4]

  Եւ ինքն Յովհաննէս ունէր հանդերձ ի ստևոյ ուղտու, և գօտի մաշկեղէն ընդ մէջ իւր, և կերակուր նորա էր մարախ և մեղր վայրենի:
  Ew inkʻn Yovhannēs unēr handerj i stewoy ułtu, ew gōti maškełēn ənd mēǰ iwr, ew kerakur nora ēr marax ew mełr vayreni:
  And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
