Etymology
Inherited from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *stew(H)- (“to get dense, tight”), and cognate with Sanskrit स्तूप (stūpa, “knot or tuft of hair”), स्तुका (stúkā, “a knot or tuft of hair or wool, thick curl of hair”), Ancient Greek στύππη (stúppē), στυππεῖον (stuppeîon, “coarse fibre of flax or hemp, tow, oakum”).[1][2][3] For more on this root see Pokorny, without the Armenian.[4]
