Inherited from Proto-Ketic *qusam-bʌnsaŋ-qo (nine), derived from Proto-Yeniseian *qusʌ-bʌnsʌ (nine) + Proto-Yeniseian *qagʌ (ten), the first part of the compound derived from Proto-Yeniseian *qus ~ *qut (one, inanimate class) + Proto-Ketic *bʌnsʌ ~ *bʌnsaŋ (does not exist, non-agreeing predicate element).[1]

Alternatively, analyzable as a compound of ӄусь (qūsʲ, one) +‎ бәньсяӈ (bə́nʲsaŋ, no, not, does not exist) +‎ ӄө (, ten) . This, in turn, yields the following operation, 10 − 1 = 9.
