Inherited from Proto-Ketic *ɯnam-bʌnsaŋ-qo (eight), derived from Proto-Yeniseian *Hɯnʌ-bʌnsʌ (eight) + Proto-Yeniseian *qagʌ (ten), the first part of the compound derived from Proto-Yeniseian *Hɯn (two) + Proto-Ketic *bʌnsʌ ~ *bʌnsaŋ (does not exist, non-agreeing predicate element).[1]

Alternatively, analyzable as a compound of ын (ɨ̄n, two) +‎ бәньсяӈ (bə́nʲsaŋ, no, not, does not exist) +‎ ӄө (, ten) . This, in turn, yields the following operation, 10 − 2 = 8.
