Etymology

Usually considered to be borrowed from Russian рожь (rožʹ, “rye”), with ы- being prothetic. However, in Chuvash, such prothesis is always realized with the reduced vowels ӑ- or ĕ-. Savelyev proposes borrowing from Nakh, compare Ingush Iаьржа кIа (ˀärža kʼa, “rye”), literally "black wheat".
