Etymology 1

Inherited from Old Slovak sniť, from Proto-Slavic *sъniti. By surface analysis, сон (son) +‎ -їц (-jic). Compare Czech snít, Polish śnić.

Usage notes

  • To express "to dream", the noun in the dative form does the dreaming. Formations such as (я) шнїл сом це ((ja) šnjil som ce), attaching a direct subject and object, are considered incorrect.
