Etymology

Inherited from Old Slovak tiahnuť, from Proto-Slavic *tęgnǫti. By surface analysis, цагац (cahac) +‎ -нуц (-nuc). Cognates include Belarusian цягну́ць (cjahnúcʹ), Carpathian Rusyn тягну́ти (tjahnúty), Polish ciągnąć and Slovak tiahnuť.
