Inherited from Old Church Slavonic постъ (postŭ), from Proto-Slavic *postъ. Non-Slavic cognates include Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽 (fastan), Old High German fasten and English fast (in this sense). [1]
