Inherited from Old Slovak mastný, from Proto-Slavic *mastьnъ. Sense 4 is a semantic loan from Serbo-Croatian мастан / mastan. By surface analysis, масц (masc) +‎ -ни (-ni). Dropping of -t- influenced by the Serbo-Croatian term, and also akin to радосни (radosni).
