Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ěxati.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈjexətʲ]
    • Audio:(file)
  • (Belarus) IPA(key): [ˈjexat͡sʲ] (phonetic respelling: е́хаць)
  • (Ukraine) IPA(key): [ˈjɛxɐtʲ]

Verb

е́хать • (jéxatʹimpf (perfective пое́хать)

  1. to go (by horse or vehicle), to ride, to drive
  2. to travel
  3. to move from a place, to slide off

Usage notes

  • The imperfective verb е́хать (jéxatʹ) with corresponding perfective пое́хать (pojéxatʹ) is a unidirectional verb. Its multidirectional counterpart is е́здить (jézditʹ).
  • The imperative forms едь (jedʹ) / е́дьте (jédʹte) and е́хай (jéxaj) / е́хайте (jéxajte) (including derivatives with prefixes) are used but are considered illiterate and are not recommended for use. The recommended imperative forms are suppletive forms поезжа́й (pojezžáj) / поезжа́йте (pojezžájte) but езжа́й (jezžáj) / езжа́йте (jezžájte) are also acceptable. The derivatives (приезжать, заезжать, выезжать, etc.) use prefix + езжа́й (jezžáj) / prefix + езжа́йте (jezžájte). For negative imperative, use не е́зди (ne jézdi).
  • The present adverbial form е́дучи (jéduči) is dated. Occasionally, in colloquial speech, other forms are encountered, such as е́дя (jédja), е́хая (jéxaja) or езжа́я (jezžája), but these are proscribed.
