Literally, “to give [some money] for tea”. Compare Chinese 茶錢 / 茶钱 (cháqián, “tip, gratuity; bribe”) and Burmese လက်ဖက်ရည်ဖိုး (lakhpak-ranyhpui:, “bribe”), as well as French pourboire (“tip, gratuity”) and German Trinkgeld (“tip, gratuity”).
