Unclear. Many theories have been put forward, among them:

• from Ancient Greek ῥοῦς (rhoûs)
• from Proto-Slavic *rusъ (“red”), having had a semantically similar name to that of the medieval fortress Червен, as the two cities were economically connected
• from Proto-Slavic *rusъ (“blonde, red-haired”)
• from Latin russus (“red”)
• of Thracian origin.^[1] See Рюсике.
