Uncertain. Perhaps inherited from Proto-Italic *walēō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl̥h₁éh₁yeti, from *h₂welh₁-. Alternatively, it may have been borrowed from Latin valeō, itself from Proto-Italic *walēō.
