σφαδᾴζω
See also: σφαδάζω
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- σφαδάζω (sphadázō), σφαδαΐζω (sphadaḯzō)
Etymology
Of unclear origin. Beekes considers two potential sets of comparanda:[1]
- σφοδρός (sphodrós, “vehement, violent”), σφεδανός (sphedanós, “vehement, violent”), σφενδόνη (sphendónē, “a sling”), σφόνδυλος (sphóndulos, “vertebra”). In this case, compare perhaps Sanskrit स्पन्द् (spand, “to quiver, vibrate”).
- σπάω (spáō, “to draw a sword”), σπαδών (spadṓn).
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /spʰa.dáːi̯z.dɔː/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /spʰaˈda.zo/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /sɸaˈða.zo/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /sfaˈða.zo/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /sfaˈða.zo/
