Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit غرس (ɣres, “to cut, to slaughter”), from Proto-Berber *ăɣrəs (“to cut, to slaughter”).
Cognate with Awjila əɣrə́š (“to slaughter”), Ghomara ɣres (“to slaughter”), Nefusa áġres (“to slaughter”), Ghadames ăɣrəs (“to immolate, to slaughter”), Northern Saharan Berber ɣers (“to sacrifice”), Tetserret aɣrəs (“to cross, to go across”), Tawellemmet and Tayert ǝɣrǝs (“to cut, to cross”), Tamasheq ăɣrǝs (“to slaughter, to cut, to cross”), and Zenaga oʔrəš (“to be slaughtered”).
