1. (obsolete) A reformed variant of ⟨ꞩ⟩ (/s/) in German-based orthography, abolished in 1921. (⟨S⟩ without a comma had been used for /z/.)

1. The twenty-third letter of the Romanian alphabet, called șe or șî and written in the Latin script.

Because earlier computer codes did not include ș, it was typed as ş (s with a cedilla) until Unicode 3 and Windows XP became mainstream in the mid-2000s.
