On April 4, 2021, church president Russell M. Nelson, during general conference, announced plans to build the Willamette Valley Oregon Temple.

The location and a rendering for the temple were announced on September 2, 2021. The temple will be located in the far north end of Springfield, Oregon, a suburb of Eugene.[6]

A groundbreaking ceremony, to signify beginning of construction, was held on October 29, 2022, with Valeri V. Cordón, a general authority and first counselor in the church's North America West Area, presiding.[8]

With construction nearing completion, the church announced on November 24, 2025, that a public open house is scheduled from April 23 to May 9, 2026, excluding Sundays. A media day and tours for invited guests will be held from April 20 to 22. The temple is scheduled for dedication on June 7, 2026, by Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.[7]
