Stráňavy

Stráňavy (Hungarian: Felsőosztorány) is a village and municipality in Žilina District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia. It lies below the mountain Polom.

In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1356. The coat-of-arms and the seal picture a bird feeding in a meadow.

Since 1598, the village has grown from 22 houses to 430 houses and counts presently 1,838 inhabitants. Stranavy has a well-developed social and technical infrastructure and pays much attention to tourism. There is a thermal bath (24-26 °C), accommodation and food facilities.

The municipality lies at an altitude of 425 metres (1,394 ft)^[3] and covers an area of 10.87 km² (4.20 sq mi) (2024).^[4]

It has a population of 1897 people (31 December 2024).^[6]

In year 2021 was 1916 people by ethnicity 1845 as Slovak, 60 as Not found out, 22 as Czech, 12 as Other, 5 as Russian, 4 as German, 4 as French, 3 as Hungarian, 1 as Italian, 1 as Rusyn, 1 as Austrian and 1 as Polish.

For example, a student is a citizen of a village because he has permanent residence there (he lived there as a child and has parents), but most of the time he studies at a university in the city.
