The Royal Purple is the yearbook of Kansas State University. It has received multiple National Pacemaker Awards[1] and was awarded a Silver Crown by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2006.[2]

The yearbook’s predecessor first appeared at Kansas State Agricultural College in 1891. Over the following years, the publication underwent several name changes, including The Sledge, Sunrise, The Bell Clapper, and The Banner. It adopted the name The Royal Purple in 1909.[3]

During the 20th century, The Royal Purple introduced several design and production features that were later adopted more widely in yearbook publishing. The 1938 edition was the first yearbook to include an opening section presenting yearly highlights in chronological order, as well as tilted photographs, full-bleed pages, news-style headlines, and a “tip-on,” an applied color photograph placed on the cover.

An embossed design on the division page, a feature that became common decades later, appeared in the 1939 edition.[4] In 1941, the staff produced what has been described as the first full-color lithograph cover used in a yearbook in the United States.

In later decades, the yearbook continued to adopt new production techniques. The 1994 edition was the first Royal Purple to feature ultraviolet (UV) lamination. In 1997, the yearbook added a CD-ROM supplement, which was replaced by a DVD in 2003.
