Nyoman Ayu Carmenita (born 28 March 2006), known as Carmen (Korean: 카르멘), is an Indonesian singer. She is currently a member of the South Korean girl group, Hearts2Hearts. Carmen is known as the first Indonesian K-pop idol to debut in SM Entertainment and also the 5th female Indonesian K-pop idol to successfully debut. Carmen began her training period at SM Entertainment in 2023.[1]

Carmen first appeared in the debut teaser for SM Entertainment's new girl group Hearts2Hearts.[2] The teaser premiered at the SMTOWN LIVE 2025 concert at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. The girl group released their debut song titled "The Chase" on 24 February 2025.[3]

Since her first appearance, Carmen has received attention and support from the Indonesian public, especially K-pop fans.[2]

Early life and education

Carmen was born and lived in Bali, Indonesia until the age of 15. Carmen is the third of four siblings and comes from a family with an artistic background. Her father, Putu Gede Suastika, is a guitarist, while her mother, Kadek Ayu Sri Handayani, is a singer with four released albums and the owner of the Ayu Bali Suara Art Studio.[4] Carmen's family practices Balinese Hinduism. She briefly attended the Christian Harapan Bali High School before continuing her studies through homeschooling in South Korea. She trained in singing, dancing, and playing the piano.[5][6]

Career

Carmen initially did not receive support from her family to pursue an idol career.[7] Her parents were reluctant to allow her to audition in South Korea because she was 15 at the time. Carmen participated in an online audition in 2022 without informing her family, and after being accepted, she told them before leaving for the next auditioning stage in Jakarta, accompanied by her older sibling. After passing the audition, Carmen departed for South Korea and spent three years training at SM Entertainment before debuting in February 2025.[7]

On 11 March 2025, Hearts2Hearts' debut song "The Chase" won on the music program The Show with a score of 8,500 points, marking the group's first music-show win 15 days after debut. This made Carmen the first Indonesian idol to receive a trophy on a weekly Korean music show.[8] Carmen later won the "Trend of the Year" award in the Rookie category at the 2025 Korea Grand Music Awards, becoming the first Indonesian idol to receive the honor.[9]
