History

Foundation:

Azamgarh Railway station was built by the British Government in 1896, it started as a minor railway stop.

Post Independence Development:

After 1947, the station underwent significant development and expansion. This was supported by successive Indian governments and railway ministers.

Current Status:

Today, Azamgarh is a major railway station with electrified double lines, four platforms, and serves as an important hub for eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Azamgarh Railway Station is undergoing major modernization as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with a total estimated cost of over ₹27 crore. The redevelopment work is currently in progress, having been reviewed by officials from the North Eastern Railway's Varanasi division in September 2025.

Key modernization projects

  • Station building and facade: The station building is being upgraded with a new, attractive facade that incorporates design elements reflecting the art and culture of the Azamgarh district. This specific project is budgeted at ₹8.14 crore.
  • Passenger amenities: A more attractive and convenient waiting hall is being built for ₹1.54 crore. The station will also get new food courts and a "pay and use" toilet facility for improved sanitation.
  • Foot overbridge: A new 12-meter-wide foot overbridge is under construction at a cost of ₹4.07 crore, with an estimated completion date of March 2026.
  • Platform improvements: Platforms are being upgraded and will feature new sheds and false ceilings. Digital display boards and automated announcement systems will be installed to provide better passenger information. The cost for these platform upgrades is estimated at ₹4.86 crore.
  • Accessibility: To ensure ease of travel for elderly and physically disabled passengers, new lifts are being installed.
  • Traffic circulation and parking: The station's circulating area, approach roads, and pathways for pedestrians are being improved for ₹5.04 crore. The project also includes modern parking facilities to reduce congestion outside the station.
  • Beautification and landscaping: The station complex will be beautified with landscaping, including a new green garden.
  • Electrification and signaling: Recent upgrades have also included the electrification of rail lines and the conversion of semaphore signaling to color signaling.
  • Reduced travel time to Varanasi: As part of a broader rail infrastructure upgrade in the region, a new rail line between Khurhat and Pipridih near Mau has been approved. This will eliminate the need for trains to reverse direction at Mau junction, saving approximately one hour of travel time between Varanasi and Azamgarh.
