William Riegel Schmalstieg

William Riegel Schmalstieg (* 3. Oktober 1929 in Sayre, Pennsylvania; † 22. Januar 2021 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania)^[1] war ein US-amerikanischer Baltist, Slawist, Indogermanist und Hochschullehrer.^[2]

William Riegel Schmalstieg studierte von 1950 bis 1956 Slawistik (Schwerpunkt: Baltoslawisch) und Sprachwissenschaft an der University of Pennsylvania; die Zeit von 1951 bis 1952 verbrachte er an der Columbia University. 1951 legte er seine Magisterprüfung ab und promovierte 1956 bei Alfred Senn auf dem Gebiet der baltoslawischen Philologie. Von 1956 bis 1959 arbeitete er als „Instructor“ an der University of Kentucky und bis 1963 als wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Von 1963 bis 1964 hatte er eine außerordentliche Professur an der University of Minnesota inne. Im Jahre 1964 übernahm er eine Professur für Slawistik an der Pennsylvania State University. Dort lehrte und forschte er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2001.

Schmalstieg arbeitete über Historische Linguistik, vor allem über indogermanische, baltische und slawische Sprachen, insbesondere Litauisch, die Altpreußische Sprache, Kirchenslawisch und Altostslawisch.

Im Jahre 1994 verlieh ihm die Universität Vilnius die Ehrendoktorwürde. 2006 wurde er auswärtiges Mitglied der Litauischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
