Thomas A. Metzger

Thomas A. Metzger (* 22. Juli 1933 in Berlinghausen; † 17. Oktober 2025) war ein US-amerikanischer Sinologe und Hochschullehrer.^[1]

Thomas A. Metzger, ein Sohn des Philosophen Arnold Metzger, studierte Sinologie an der University of Chicago und erwarb dort 1952 den Bachelorgrad. Er setzte dann sein Studium an der Georgetown University fort und legte 1959 die Magisterprüfung ab. Seine Promotion zum Ph.D. erfolgte 1967 an der Harvard University. Von 1968 bis 1969 unterrichtete er an der Hebräischen Universität Jerusalem. Von 1970 bis 1990 hatte er eine Professur für China-Studien an der University of California, San Diego inne. Zahlreiche Gastprofessuren führten ihn an Universitäten in China, Taiwan und Hongkong. Er war "Senior Fellow" der Hoover Institution.^[2]

Thomas A. Metzger beschäftigte sich in seinen Veröffentlichungen vor allem mit den zeitgeschichtlichen Entwicklungen in Ostasien und ihren Beziehungen zur westlichen Welt.
