Paul Secord

Paul Frank Secord (* 1925; † 1996) war ein US-amerikanischer Sozialpsychologe und Professor der University of Houston.[1]

Leben

Er erwarb seinen B.A. am Ripon College. Es folgten ein M.A. an der Stanford University; hier promovierte er auch zum Ph.D. Danach bekam er eine Professur an der University of Nevada, Reno, wo er u. a. Ellen Berscheid betreute. Es folgte eine Professur am College of Education Faculty der University of Houston. Dabei war er zuletzt Professor Emeritus of Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies.

Werk

Durch seine Auseinandersetzung mit Fritz Heider gelangte er zur Sozialpsychologie und speziell zu Untersuchungen über zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen. Er hat in vielen empirischen Studien das Thema der interpersonellen Wahrnehmung und der interpersonellen Attraktivität erforscht. Dabei arbeitete er zu Frauen, Geschlechterrollen und der Geschichte der Beziehungen zwischen Männern und Frauen. Provokant war sein Buch „Too many women? The sex ratio question“, in welchem er herausarbeitete, dass das Geschlechterverhältnis auf dem Heiratsmarkt tiefgreifende Auswirkungen auf vielfältige Einstellungen, Werte und Verhaltensweisen – von Sexualmoral und -verhalten bis hin zu Verschiebungen der wirtschaftlichen Machtverhältnisse, hat. Er lieferte auch Belege dafür, dass wahrgenommene Ähnlichkeit und die interpersonelle Kongruenz mit interpersoneller Anziehung korrelieren. Daneben hat er sich auch mit Themen zur Wissenschaftstheorie auseinandergesetzt, wobei er zeigte, dass die Psychologie zur Erklärung des Verhaltens einzelner Individuen nicht nur psychologische Theorien, sondern auch situative, biografische und historische Informationen benötigt.

Seine gemeinsam mit Carl W. Backman verfassten Bücher waren sowohl in den USA als auch in Europa weit verbreitet und gelten als Standardwerke für Psychologen, Soziologen und Pädagogen. Sie trugen dazu bei, die Sozialpsychologie als eigenständige Disziplin zu etablieren und mit Soziologie und Pädagogik zu verknüpfen.
