Inherited from Middle Ottoman Turkish ظالم (zalım), from Old Anatolian Turkish ظَالِم (zalım), from Classical Persian ظَالِم (zālim), from Arabic ظَالِم (ẓālim).

Cognate with Turkish zalim, zalım (dialectal, Kırşehir), Azerbaijani zalım and zalim.
