Through *zan(gj)u, likely from Koine Greek τζαγγίον n (tzangíon, “a Byzantine kind of shoe”), from an earlier Persian ظانگا (zângâ), as in Parthian, absorbed in Latin zanga. Compare Italian zingaro, which, by the way, states a different etymology; the Sicilian hypothesis is supported by the synonymy with caminanti (walker).
