From Proto-Finnic *ülä (compare Estonian üla-), from Proto-Uralic *wülä (compare Lule Sami alle, Erzya вель- (veľ-), вельга (veľga), Western Mari вӹлӓн (vÿlän), Udmurt выл (vyl), Northern Khanty єԓ (êł), Tundra Nenets ниʼ (nyih)). Some of the derived terms, like yleensä, ylen and ylös exhibit a variant yle-; this variant goes back to at least Proto-Finnic (see the entry for more).
